Today, Israel observes Yom HaShoah, or Holocaust Remembrance Day.
Shmoop offers 4 Learning Guides for Holocaust literature – The Diary of Anne Frank, Night, The Book Thief, and The Chosen.
What other works of Holocaust literature should we add to Shmoop?
Thanks so much for remembering Yom HaShoah. Your Jewish readers appreciate it very much. The books you choose, specifically Diary of a Young Girl, Night, and The Book Thief are all superb reads.
I would also recommend Richard Glazer’s stunning memoir Trap with a Green Door, about his experience in Treblinka. Gitta Sereny’s non-fiction work, Into that Darkness, is a powerful description of what occured in many of the camps. Victor Frankl’s Man’s Search for Meaning is also an amazing philosophical work that derived from his time at Auschwitz. Sophie’s Choice and Number the Stars are other Holocaust-related books. Corrie Ten Boom’s The Hiding Place is a good look at non-Jews who were persecuted for helping shield survivors. Thanks again, Shmoop.
