Major, major, major! Or (Major)3 for you AP Calc folks.
You know a book is a hit when the title becomes a household phrase…and a legit cultural phenomenon. So we must shout, shout, shout it out:
50th Anniversary of Catch-22′s Publication
It’s by far the best Catch of the series, since 21 was a little too absurdist if you ask us. Also, you can’t go wrong when characters have names like John Yossarian, Captain Aardvark (our personal favorite), and Milo Minderbinder (our other personal favorite).
Check out the Shmoop guide, and help us celebrate half a century of being unfit to fly. Too fit to fly? Either way, you’re flying.
PSAT Week: Good Shmoop to All
We hope you are all have a wonderful PSAT week. National Merit Scholarships and ultimate cool are definitely side effects of the P to the SAT. If you didn’t take the exam on Wednesday, get ready for Saturday with a session on Shmoop. Check us out.
National Dictionary Day
Read the dictionary for fun? (Us too, and we’re serious: this is not a sheep-counter.)
To honor the birth of Noah Webster—yup that guy, even though he didn’t actually invent the dictionary—celebrate National Dictionary Day on October 16. We’re planning a massive soiree/wingding/fete/PARTAY at Shmoop HQ, but since not everyone is a logophile, here’s something to help you expand your vocabulary:
Don’t be a gongoozler. (Here today, gongoozler.)
Shmoop in Sparkling Spanish
Looking for a fun way to spend a Friday? (We know Catorce de Octubre doesn’t have quite the same ring as Cinco de Mayo, but just go with us here.)
Shmoop celebrates America’s second most popular language by translating our SAT and ACT guides into Spanish. For un poco sabor of what you’ll be using to ace your next big test, check out our Spanish guides.
Shmoop Group Rates for Your High School or District
Looking up the number of National Merit Scholars at your school? How about getting students amped about the ACT or SAT? Shmoop offers awesome group rates for entire schools and districts looking for the maximum Shmoop for the minimum buck (i.e., Don’t be a schmuck).
Winnie-the-Pooh’s Birthday
A. A. Milne’s classic turns 85 today. Whether you’re more of an Eeyore, a Tigger, or a Pooh Bear, this book/movie/epic Disneyland ride has brought joy to millions. After all, everyone deserves some hunny now and then, even Jennifer Aniston.
Operation: Yeti
We don’t know about you, but every time we think of the abominable snowman, we picture Bumble from Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. (We know he used to be the Abominable Snow Monster and hated the holidays, but he eventually reformed and became an upstanding citizen of Christmastown. What? We don’t watch the movie six times a year…)
If you’re into misunderstood snowbeasts—and who isn’t?—you’ll be pleased to know that scientists think they’ve found evidence of the yeti in the Kemerovo region of Russia. Do you want to believe? (Now, perhaps? Or not yeti?)
Shmoop Shout Out: Claude Garamond, Font Champion of Our Hearts
Around 450 years ago, the world lost one of its greatest fontmasters when Claude Garamond went to the great typesetting place in the sky. (The font Garamond? Invented in 1540. Times New Roman just turned 80, which makes it a relative n00b in comparison.)
Honor the OG typographer and father of the apostrophe by moving some letters around your screen—trust us, it’s harder than it looks. Learn to kern here.
Shmoop Shout Out 2.0: Best Spelling Bee Ever
Words can’t really express how awesome this father-daughter hug must feel. So we won’t try. Just watch.
We have crab apples in our cheeks (to go along with the zits; it is high school, after all),
